Drag Racing Modified Cars-Focus on the New Wave of Power
We have entered a new era where displacement battles are long gone and in their wake a new breed of tuning has taken over. From turbochargers to superchargers to nitrous the new wave of speed has taken control. With new factory tuner cars such as the Volkswagen GTi which is faster from 0 to 60 than a 1960's Mustang Mach 1 the new era has arrived. Speed now means high revs, forced induction, and even laughing gas. Raw cubes have been edged out by the new wave of high pressure, light weight rockets.

A nitrous systems works by injecting the gas directly into the engine's intake valves. The gas cools the air down which makes it possible to get more air into the combustion chamber resulting in more power.

A turbo charger forces more air into the combustion chamber with a turbine that is spun by recycled engine exhaust gases. More air means more power.

A free flowing exhaust system allows the engine to get rid of combustion gases faster. If there is no muffler there will be no back pressure which results in a loss of power. It may sound fast but it will be slow. That's where performance mufflers come in. They gain power by flowing more exhaust but also providing needed back pressure.

Light alloy wheels reduce weight and when used with a low profile tire they can improve handling. Less sidewall height means less flex and more road grip. Not to mention cars just look faster with a nice set of rims.

Body kits are mainly used to make a car look meaner. Some body kits are functional and produce down force on the car. More downforce means more grip at speed but less top speed.

For the most part spoilers just make a car look faster. There are some spoilers out there which are functional and actually force the rear of the car down at higher speeds resulting in more grip.
